iLP – The translators view
How to translate with iLP - Overview
After navigating to a component, a series of links leads to its actual translation. The translation is further divided into individual checks, such as Untranslated Strings or Strings Requiring Action. When the entire project is translated without errors, All Strings is still available. Alternatively, you can use the search field to find a specific string or term.
Translate
The translation page displays the source string and an editing area for its translation. If the translation is plural, several source strings and editing areas are displayed, each described and labeled in the number of plural forms that the translated language has.
All special characters for spaces are underlined in red and marked with gray symbols. More than one trailing space is also underlined in red to alert the translator to a possible formatting problem.
Various additional information can be displayed on this page, most of which comes from the project source code (such as context, comments, etc.). Translation fields for all secondary languages that you as a translator have selected in the preferences are displayed above the source text.
Nearby strings
Displays neighboring strings from the translation file. These are usually also used in a similar context and prove useful for keeping the translation consistent.
Variants
Variants are used to group different length variants of a string. The frontend of your project can then use different strings depending on the screen or window size.
Other occurrences
If a string occurs more than once (for example, if there are multiple components), this tab will display all of them if they are found to be inconsistent. You can choose which of them you want to use for your current translation.
Comments
Three types of comments can be posted: Translation, source code, or to report source code errors if this feature is enabled. Choose the one that fits the topic you want to discuss. Source comments are in any case good for giving feedback on the original text, for example that it should be reworded, or for asking questions about it that are relevant to all languages, not just your own.
You can use Markdown syntax in all comments and mention other users with @username.
Automatic suggestions
Based on the configuration and the language you translate, ILP offers suggestions from various machine translation tools and translation memories.
History
Every change is saved to the database by default (unless turned off in the component settings) and can be undone. Optionally, you can also undo something else in the underlying version control system.
Glossary
Displays terms from the project glossary that are used in the current string.
Translation context
(source information).
This contextual description provides related information about the current string.
String attributes
Things like message ID, context (msgctxt) or position in source code.
Screenshots
Screenshots can be uploaded to ILP to better inform translators about where and how the string is used.
